First released in 1942, the Gibson J-45 quickly earned the nickname “The Workhorse” thanks to its straightforward design, understated elegance, and unwavering reliability. It is Gibson’s best-selling acoustic guitar of all time and one of the most recorded acoustic guitars in history, appearing on countless recordings and stages across virtually every musical genre.
Gibson now introduces the J-45 Studio Walnut, a modern evolution of this legendary instrument. Handcrafted in Bozeman, Montana, it features all-solid tonewoods, including a gloss nitrocellulose lacquer-finished Sitka spruce top that delivers wide dynamic range, excellent responsiveness, and balanced tone.
The walnut back and sides, finished in satin nitrocellulose lacquer, produce a sound that is warm and rich, with slightly more bass and treble than traditional mahogany-bodied J-45 models, yet not as overtone-heavy as rosewood versions. Its full-depth round-shoulder body ensures deep low end, strong projection, and impressive overall volume.
An utile neck with Gibson’s Advanced Response profile offers a comfortable, “just right” feel, sitting perfectly between slimmer and chunkier neck designs. The rosewood fingerboard, with a 16" radius, makes fast passages effortless, while the mother-of-pearl dot inlays preserve the classic J-45 aesthetic.
For rock-solid tuning stability, the guitar is equipped with Grover Rotomatic tuners, a Graph Tech TUSQ nut, and TUSQ saddle and bridge pins. The L.R. Baggs Element Bronze active under-saddle pickup, with a soundhole-mounted volume control, provides studio-quality plug-and-play performance anywhere. Packaged in a modern hardshell case, the J-45 Studio Walnut is ready to follow you wherever inspiration strikes.
