Digitech Brian May Red Special
Product Information
- The Digitech Brian May guitar effects pedal helps you to achieve a sound quality that matches that of the lead guitarist of Queen, Brian May. That’s because DigiTech models seven of the signature sounds Brian May produced while playing with that legendary band. All of these effects were ones he played on his famous homemade Red Special guitar. The guitar controls give you three basic options, based on what guitar you’re playing. The “SC” mode makes a single coil Strat-type electric guitar come across like a Red Special. The “HB” mode makes a humbucker Les Paul type of electric guitar come across like the Red Special. There’s also the Red Special mode itself for playing an actual Brian May Special through this pedal. The DigiTech Brian May pedal accessories feature seven control knobs. These controls include the Gain, Level, Treble, Bass, Control, Guitar, and Model, and together they let you dial in the exact tone you seek. Gain control modifies the level of distortion. Level adjusts the level of output from the pedal. The two EQ controls set the levels of your high and low frequencies. The control knob labeled Control actually performs several functions, depending on which Model is selected. On certain effects, like those used on “Keep Yourself Alive,” it controls the amount of effect produced. On effects like those heard on “We Will Rock You,” it controls the effect’s rate. Effects like those on “Tie Your Mother Down” demonstrates modified tones. The delay frequency is also changeable, as demonstrated on the song “Brighton Rock.”The Model control on the pedal lets you select which of the seven classic Queen guitar sounds to duplicate. All were based on May’s guitar, which he played with Burns Tri-Sonic pickups and a treble booster through a Vox amp on most of the above examples. On “Keep Yourself Alive”, toe mode gives you a rich tape-flange music, while heel mode is for playing your solos. On “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the toe mode gives you a classic soloing feel, emulating vocals and rich with sustain. Heel mode on this model emulates the orchestral rhythm and finale fanfare with “Deacy” amps. On “Tie Your Mother Down,” the toe mode combines sustain and distortion. Heel mode cranks that up even higher as if for a solo with the mic close up. “We Will Rock You / We Are the Champions (Of the World)” gives you a phaser that churns and a distortion that’s soft and silky. This applies no matter whether it’s in heel or toe mode. The toe mode on “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” gives the acoustic guitars more feel with a small delay. Heel mode gives a Telecaster rockabilly feel. “Brighton Rock Solo – Live” uses a toe mode that gives you a solo with the chorus tight and a triple-amplifier delay. Heel mode gives you an orchestral harmonizer for the parts. On “Deacy Tone/A Winter’s Tale,” toe mode gives you a raw sound, as if played through Brian May’s signature amp. Heel mode on this model adds to that a reverb and delay as a post-effect to make solos more ethereal. The pedal is preset to have a certain combination of high, middle, and low tones, and the phaser provides just the right effect, depending on the song and the venue. If you want to shine on your own, customize your sound by manually adjusting the EQ volumes when you want a change of pace. These DigiTech pedals come with several accessories. This includes a gig bag, Sixpence Plectrum, a power supply, and an instruction book.
