Description
The JSBDG is a re-creation of guitarist ‘s legendary late ‘80s/early ‘90s “Black Dog” electric guitar. The original Black Dog was the first prototype which preceded the introduction of the ; Satriani decorated it himself with doodles and used it as his main stage guitar for most of a decade.
The Black Dog reproduction was revealed at the Summer 2008 musical instrument convention in Nashville. It was built in Japan by .
The JSBDG features a basswood body bolted to a maple neck with a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot position markers. Components include a pair of DiMarzio mounted in plastic pickup rings, an Edge bridge and Gotoh tuning machines.
Differences between the original Black Dog prototype and the eventual production JS models that were carried over to the Black Dog reproduction include the original control locations, the lack of a high-pass filter control on the volume pot and the mounting location of the output jack style.
Satriani’s doodles and artwork from the original Black Dog prototype were laboriously recreated by hand, individually, by just one highly skilled Japanese artist. A clear coat finish was applied once the doodles were completed. The designs which extend onto the pickup rings, pickups, fine tuners, knobs and tremolo bar were reproduced as well.
The Black Dog was offered only in 2008 and just 88 examples were produced.
